Welcome to the chapter “Dead paddle: sound, touch and visual signs to check”: relaxed reading and a healthy dose of curiosity. A few simple tests make it easy to recognize a paddle that has lost its responsiveness.
The jargon, made simple
A little camp dictionary, so that everyone speaks the same language:
Legal guarantee of conformity
This is the protection provided by law that requires the seller to deliver a conforming item and to repair or replace one that has a defect.
To make it concrete: a new paddle delaminates after little normal use, and the buyer invokes the legal guarantee with the seller.
Want to know more? The Legal guarantee of conformity page covers all of this.
For a first look, a specialized retailer lists, among others, “Raquette Rally — Carbone T700”.
Under the hood, gently
One rule worth knowing: the paddle must carry the USA Pickleball approval seal or sticker, along with the brand name and model clearly marked by the manufacturer.
A regulatory detail: in a tournament sanctioned by USA Pickleball, the paddle must appear on the approved paddle list; the referee checks this before play begins.
On the official rules side, a paddle that fails the check must be replaced with an approved paddle, otherwise the match is forfeited.
To understand how things work: the FFT obtained ministerial delegation for pickleball in January 2026.
The action plan
A helpful tip: the 2025 USA Pickleball rules allow protective tape, weighted tape and changing the grip size.
The selection grid, in plain terms
The criteria are reviewed one by one, just as before picking teams:
- Besides hollow sounds, a spot that feels soft to the touch, an uneven surface or inconsistent performance can give away delamination.
- A visible crack on the face, edge guard, throat or handle is a reason to take the paddle out of competitive play.
- The United Pickleball Association recommends taking a paddle out of play if there is a visible crack on the face, edge guard, throat or handle.
- A perceptible crackle when the paddle face is pressed, or a rattling noise when it is shaken, points to internal deterioration according to United Pickleball Association guidelines (this is not an official rule).
- In a delaminated paddle, the glue holding the layers together breaks down; the layers separate and create a trampoline effect that increases the power of the ball.
Where it gets slippery
A little caution sign before moving on:
- In recreational play, there is no systematic check for delamination: it is up to players to inspect their own equipment.
- If a paddle's non-conformity is detected before the match, the player changes it without penalty; if it is detected after play has started, the match is forfeited.
Which sound gives away a dead zone?
On the official rules side, an identification sticker or tape must not extend more than half an inch from the edge or more than one inch above the handle; a handwritten identification mark is permitted.
Worth noting over time: pickleball has been officially part of the Fédération française de tennis since January 1, 2026.

Your questions
Who should be contacted for the legal guarantee?
The seller of the product, not necessarily the manufacturer. The detailed procedures are on the service-public page.

The conformity rules cited come mostly from USA Pickleball; in France, the FFT received the pickleball delegation in early 2026, so the rules of the specific competition should be checked.
A homemade repair can change how the paddle behaves and make it non-compliant in a tournament; when in doubt, the referee or the organizer should be asked.
